The Spiritual Gift of Healing
Definition:
Healing is the spiritual gift and supernatural ability to pray for those who are sick and see them recover.
Description:
Throughout the New Testament, healings always accompanied the preaching of the Gospel. Healings served as a sign that God’s kingdom was at hand and that he is restoring creation back to its original design. Like all of the gifts of the Spirit, Healing operates according to God’s will. No gift and especially Healing can be put on the spot or conjured up but operates through those who humbly allow God to move through them.
Example from the Scripture:
Healing is a major part of both the Old and New Testament. The book of Psalms encourages people to seek the Lord for Healing (Psalm 103:3). The disciples and the seventy-two were commissioned by Jesus to cast out demons and heal the sick (Luke 10:1,9). Praying for Healing was also a common practice and command for the early Church (James 5:16).
When this gift is present:
When the gift of Healing is active in a church, there is a profound sense of God’s nearness to our lives.
When this gift is absent:
When the gift of Healing is not given place to operate in the church, not only are people not healed but also there is a missed opportunity to see the power of God manifest in a profound way.
In the Life of Jesus:
The Scripture tells us, “And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction.” (Matthew 9:35). Everywhere Jesus went, he ministered healing to those that were sick and afflicted by disease.
