The Spiritual Gift of Service

Definition:

Service or helps is a spiritual gift and supernatural ability to assist people in furthering the work of the kingdom of God.

Description:

People who are gifted in Service strengthen the church by helping others fulfill a vision. People who are gifted in Service/Helps typically help behind the scenes volunteering their time and energy to advance the Kingdom of God.

Example from the Scripture:

Romans 16 is an amazing passage to read. Nearly the entire chapter is full of people Paul the apostle thanked for helping him in his ministry. Although many of the names are unfamiliar, without their help, the churches that Paul the apostle founded would have never been able to be started. These people include Prisca, Aquila, Mary, Andronicus, Junia, Urbanus, Tryphaena, Tryphosa, and Persis.

When this gift is present:

When gifts of Service are active in a local church, there is ample help to fulfill the mission and vision.

When this gift is absent:

When the gift of Service are absent in a local church, the workload falls on a few people, and vision for future ministry cannot be fulfilled.

In the Life of Jesus:

Matthew 20:28 tells us, “the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
